Background
Aster Mekonnen, a 32-year-old mother of three from the Oromia region, was traditionally confined to household duties with no formal education or income. Her family struggled to make ends meet, and Aster had no voice in community decisions.
Transformation
In 2022, Aster joined ACEO’s Women’s Leadership Training Program. Over six months, she received training in leadership, public speaking, financial literacy, and advocacy. Initially hesitant, Aster gradually gained confidence and began participating in community meetings.
Achievements
- Elected as vice-chair of her local kebele women’s association
- Started a small textile business employing 4 other women
- Advocated for girls’ education in her community
- Family income increased by 300%
Impact
“Before ACEO, I was invisible in my own community. Today, I lead meetings, make decisions, and help other women find their voice. My daughters see me differently now – they know women can lead,” says Aster.
Future Goals
Aster now mentors 15 other women and plans to expand her business to employ 20 women by 2025.
